Fallopian Tube Blockage Treatment

IVF treatment in Kathmandu, Nepal at Angel Fertility Clinic

Fallopian tubes are reproductive organs that connect the uterus to the ovaries in a female body. The tubes facilitate the travel of an egg from the ovary to the uterus during ovulation, which usually occurs in the middle of a menstrual cycle, every month. Further, it is the place of conception that happens due to the meeting of the egg with sperm.

If there is a blockage or damage in the fallopian tube, there will be an obstruction in the fertilisation process that leads a female to conceive. Females have damaged or blocked fallopian tubes due to infection, pelvic adhesions, and infection.

Symptoms of the blocked fallopian tubes

There are no obvious signs of the blocked fallopian tubes. Many females are not aware of the fact that they have blockage of damage in their fallopian tubes. They know it when they notice delay in conception and a respective doctor confirms blocked fallopian tubes prohibiting them from having a conception.

Some females with blocked fallopian tubes can experience mild constant pain on one side of their abdomen. It happens due to hydrosalpinx, a type of tubal blockage. Reproductive health conditions that can cause blockages or damages in the fallopian tubes have their own signs/symptoms. For instance, endometriosis causes pelvic pain and painful heavy periods. It can lead you to have blocked fallopian tubes.

Causes of the blocked fallopian tubes

Pelvic adhesions and scar tissues cause blockages or damages in the fallopian tubes. These happen to you due to several factors like:

  • Endometriosis - The development of endometrial tissue in the fallopian tubes or on the outside of other reproductive organs in a female body cause adhesions that lead to the tubal blockage.
  • STIs (sexually transmitted infections) - STIs such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia cause scars and pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Fibroids - These can block the fallopian tube, especially at their connection point with the uterus.
  • PID - Pelvic inflammatory disease causes hydrosalpinx or scars that damages or blocks either or both of the fallopian tubes.
  • Previous ectopic pregnancy - It causes scars in the fallopian tubes.
  • Prior abdominal surgery - Past surgery, especially tubal removal or correction surgery, can cause pelvic adhesions that can lead to the tubal blockage.

Diagnosis for the blocked fallopian tubes

Usually, a fertility specialist advises an HSG test along with other fertility tests when a female complains of having conception issues. HSG or hysterosalpingography is a kind of x-ray to look into the inside of the fallopian tubes to diagnose the damages or blockages there. During this process, the doctor inserts a dye into the fallopian tubes and uterus of a female.

Treatment for the blocked fallopian tubes

Based on your HSG report, your doctor can recommend laparoscopic surgery for opening your tubes and removing the blockage if your fallopian tubes have a small amount of adhesions or scar tissue. In the case of a higher amount of scar tissues or adhesions, your doctor may not advise any surgery option to you. Surgery to repair the damage caused by infection or ectopic pregnancy can be helpful for you.
