Chronic Stress And Fertility: How IVF Can Help

IVF treatment in Kathmandu, Nepal at Angel Fertility Clinic

Everyone experiences stress due to their work, personal issues, or daily challenges. Mostly, Stress is usually temporary but sometimes people may suffer from chronic stress that lasts for weeks, months, or even years. It causes them to feel pressured and anxious. Most people know that stress can affect the way we feel emotionally and physically. But they don't realize it also can affect something as important as fertility, which is the ability to have children.

What Is Chronic Stress?

Chronic stress means a persistent feeling of pressure and overload over a very long period. Unlike those stresses that last for some milliseconds, chronic stress is rather difficult to get rid of. It causes suffering and it even makes people exhausted. This chronic stress even causes serious impact on one's body, mood, sleep, mental health, and their physical health.

How Does Chronic Stress Lower Fertility?

During stress, the human body releases that type of  hormone known as Cortisol which helps in dealing with many situations. Cortisol is also often known as Stress Hormone. When cortisol levels stay high for a long period of time then chronic stress can lead to serious problems that will make it hard to overcome it. Chronic stress can significantly affect both men's and women's fertility by interfering and messing with the body's natural reproductive processes.

How Stress Affects Women’s Fertility

For women, chronic stress can be known as a disaster which takes complete control over their menstrual cycle and causes a mess in the release of eggs from their ovaries. It is one of the serious problems for women as it causes problems and messes up their hormones. Continuous stress and the high level of cortisol can interfere with the regular release of eggs and also make it harder for women to get pregnant. Stress can also affect the quality of a woman's eggs and lining of her uterus, as both of them are very important and necessary for a successful pregnancy. If the body of women isn’t in the best state to carry a pregnancy, then it might cause challenges for an egg to be properly fertilized and implanted in the uterus.

How Stress Affects Men’s Fertility

For men, chronic stress can cause problems in their fertility. Due to continuous stress, the produced sperm can decrease its quality and lower the number of sperm. Chronic stress causes problems like decreasing the levels of testosterone, the hormone that aids in the production of healthy sperm. As a result, it even affects the men to have less and fewer healthy sperm. It may also affect the motility of sperm, which troubles the sperm in swimming towards the egg for fertilization. Thus, it will be quite difficult for men to help their partner conceive.

How IVF Can Help When Stress Lowers Fertility?

If conceiving is hard because of chronic stress or other circumstances, then IVF or In Vitro Fertilisation can be one solution. In such a case, the medically termed procedure of IVF helps childless couples. As a helping measure in fertilisation, a series of actions is followed in which the sperm and egg are combined outside the body. Here’s how IVF works:

Step 1: Stimulation of Egg Production

In the first step of IVF, medicine is taken by the woman to stimulate her ovaries to produce several eggs instead of just one. The doctors want to have a few eggs to choose from for the steps which are crucial. Ultrasounds and blood tests are used to closely examine in order to ensure that the eggs are developing healthy.

Step 2: Egg Retrieval

Once the eggs are ready, the doctor collects them from the women's ovaries through use of small surgical procedures. During this step, anesthesia is given to women, so they don't feel any pain.

Step 3: Sperm Collection

At the same time, men also provide their sample of sperm. After that, sperm is washed properly and then prepared in the laboratory in order to help them in swimming and fertilizing the eggs.

Step 4: Fertilization in the Lab

In the lab, eggs are mixed with sperm in order to execute the fertilization process. During this time, doctors carefully make sure that sperm meet eggs and form embryos. Sometimes, medical professionals perform intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection in order to insert the single sperm directly into the egg to improve fertilization.

Step 5: Embryo Culture and Selection

Fertilized eggs are allowed to grow for a few days till they reach a certain stage of development, usually three to five days. The doctors then select the best embryos amongst all and transfer them into the uterus of ladies.

Step 6: Embryo Transfer

In this step, the selected embryos were placed by the doctor into the woman's uterus through a thin tube. If things go well, one of the embryos implants themselves into the lining of the uterus and starts to develop into a baby.

Why IVF Can Help Couples Cope with the Stress

IVF can be helpful for the couple who are facing the problem related to fertility caused by chronic stress and are having trouble conceiving. With advanced medical technology, it helps in fertilizing the egg outside the body and then transferring it into the uterus; thus, IVF can bypass the issues caused by stress. To many childless couples, IVF has provided a much-needed opportunity when all other methods have failed.

Conclusion

Chronic stress acts to the detriment of fertility in both women and men by interfering with important hormones and reducing the likelihood of pregnancy. However, for those childless couples facing such hurdles, IVF offers reason to be optimistic. By helping to fertilize eggs and sperm outside the body and implanting a healthy embryo, many couples can get their dream of becoming parents.
