Effects On Fertility: Smoking, Drinking And Drugs

IVF treatment in Kathmandu, Nepal at Angel Fertility Clinic

Infertility has become a growing issue with the infertility rate increasing each year, mostly in developing countries like Nepal. With the rise in modern advancement and technology, many opportunities to help with fertility issues and conceiving such as, IVF, IUI, PGT-SR have been presented to us. However, it is best if we could prevent infertility altogether than to find a cure for it. There are various factors that can cause infertility among people. Among them, smoking, drinking and drug usage is a prevailing factor causing infertility.

Smoking, Drinking, Drugs and Infertility

Both men and women can be negatively impacted by alcohol consumption, smoking, and drug usage. For example, smoking reduces fertility in women by interfering with ovulation and affecting the quality of the eggs, while in men it is linked to lower sperm counts, decreased mobility, and abnormal appearance. Excessive alcohol consumption alters hormone levels in both sexes, diminishing testosterone levels and sperm production in males and causing irregular menstrual cycles and ovulation issues in women. Consumption of illegal drugs also affects the quality of sperm and ovulation, upsetting the delicate hormonal balance necessary for healthy reproduction. These unhealthy practices can dramatically raise the risk of infertility, making it difficult for couples to conceive naturally and demanding professional advice and lifestyle adjustments to increase their chances of becoming parents.

Effects on Female fertility

1.      Hormonal Imbalances

The chemicals present in cigarettes, alcohol and drugs have the potential to upset the delicate hormonal balance necessary for ovulation and normal menstrual cycles. Hormonal abnormalities can cause irregular or nonexistent menstrual cycles, making it difficult to anticipate fertile days and choose the best time for conception. It also causes reduction of ovarian reserve and decreased quality of eggs.

2.      Increasing the Chance of Miscarriage

Women who abuse drugs, smoke, or drink excessively have a higher risk of miscarriage than those who do not. The chemicals present in those substances have an immediate impact on the growing fetus and can cross the placenta. Normal fetal development may be disrupted because the toxic components of these chemicals are dangerous to the developing embryo which leads to birth defects and even miscarriages.

3.      Reduced Response to Fertility Treatments

Drug, alcohol, and smoking usage may lower the success rates of fertility treatments including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other assisted reproductive technologies. These drugs' detrimental effects on fertility may make it more difficult for women to conceive successfully with the help of fertility therapies.

Effect on Male Fertility

1.      Hormonal Imbalances

These drugs can throw off the body's hormonal equilibrium in men, which can have an impact on the release of hormones that are involved in reproduction, such as testosterone. Decrease in sperm count, reduced sperm motility (ability to move), and abnormal sperm shape are some effects that may further be led to by hormonal imbalance. The chemicals present in those substances also cause sperm DNA damage and compromise sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg.

2.      Erectile Dysfunction

Smoking, excessive drinking, and drug usage are linked to a higher chance of developing erectile dysfunction, which makes it challenging for men to get and keep the erection they need for sexual activity and conception.

3.      Success of Fertility Treatment

Men who smoke, drink excessively, or use drugs may have lower success rates with fertility treatments including intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF). These chemicals may reduce sperm quality, making successful pregnancies with assisted reproductive procedures more difficult.

The rise in infertility is linked to smoking, drinking, and drug abuse, affecting both men and women. Adopting a healthier lifestyle and seeking professional guidance can improve fertility outcomes and promote a future where parenthood is achievable for all. Awareness and informed choices are essential in addressing this issue.
